The first 800gb UK TiVo is here!
That's right! 800gb - 990 hours at basic, 282 hours at best!
Using 2 x 400gb Seagate Barracuda 7200.8 drives we have successfully created
what we believe to be the first 800gb UK TiVo!
It was a tricky process due to the limitations of the MFSTools 2.0 software
used to configure the drives, but our experience of creating large upgrades
enabled us to do it. The first upgrade was installed in a test TiVo on the
18th May 2005 and was successfully soak-tested for 10 days thereafter before we
started offering 800gb upgrades for sale on the 28th.
Despite the huge capacity, performance proved quite acceptable during the
soak-test, even without a cachecard! However, for longer-term use we would
definitely recommend the addition of a cachecard with 512mb of RAM, as
experience shows that larger TiVos do tend to suffer performance degradation
over time as the database gets more cluttered and the Now Playing list extends
to hundreds (or in this case, thousands!) of recordings.
See here for details of our drive upgrade
packages.
